Dorset Mobile Planetarium
With Thanks To Our Sponsors
Free Mobile Planetarium
Planetariums can inspire children like nothing else. Schools love them, but unfortunately, they are quite expensive to hire – over £500/day. With the help of our sponsors, we’ve been able to purchase our own mobile planetarium that we can take to various events offering free planetarium shows.
Hire The Planetarium
Our insured and DBS checked STEM ambassadors can bring the dome to your school. Being a 4m dome, it can fit up to 20-25 children in at a time, less than some others, but we can fit in much smaller spaces. Others run 6-7m domes which need at least 8x8m free space with a ceiling that is at least 3.6m – not every school can accommodate this, or if they can it means fitting around canteen arrangements. Coupled with our marquee, we’re one of the only providers in the UK that can set-up outside.
Our mobile planetarium is currently volunteer run, often with staff taking time out of their day jobs to run sessions. Where possible, we will try to offer the dome hire for free, but a donation would be greatly appreciated. This helps us ensure the dome is well maintained.
We’re currently expanding our library, but we have licenses to some amazing shows covering topics from space, to biology. Shows include the award-winning ‘We are aliens’ and GoogleX’s “Back to the Moon, for good”. We can also perform a live presenter led show, including what will be visible that night in the sky above your town/village.
Inside the dome
On school visits, it is normal for children to sit cross-legged on the floor under the dome. We do go a step further than most and have a blanket under the dome. If requested, we have inflatable chairs available, but that reduces the capacity of the dome. If every viewer is on an inflatable chair, only 10 people can watch the show. This is ideal for older children or adults that would prefer not to sit on the floor.
The Dorset based Insurance Software provider generously donated funds for the Atom Club’s first Inflatable Dome. This 4m custom made dome can hold up to 20 children at a time and is the perfect start for us.
